Schedule
The larp takes place over two days of play, and is largely structured around the impactful poker games that are played. Each poker game will take roughly 2 hours. During this time, half of the participants are actively playing, while the others are either spending time at the table or with each other. In some couples, who is playing might also change between the games. Very subtle cheating, communication, light distractions and talking about the games is encouraged.
Here is the rundown of the larp itself, while at the bottom of this page there are actual schedules.
Day 1
Before the first game
Everyone arrives and gets to know each other. They eat a light lunch, move into their rooms and check out the premises. The atmosphere is light hearted but with a distinct tension underneath the surface.
Game 1 – Establishing the players
The first game consists of two tables, with everyone having an equal number of chips. The players of each table are random. During this time, the players are expected to be conservative and not try anything wild in order to preserve their chips and their companion.
After the first game, the realization that this is happening and that it is for real might dawn on some of them. For those that have lost a lot already, they might feel desperate to get back into it. For those that have won, they find themselves with real power to negotiate, bargain or decide over others.
Game 2 – Dividing winners and losers
Anyone who can go into the second day already owning the Hold Token (The symbolic right to indenture that person) will be in a good position and this is the game where you can make it happen. It is played in the evening and this is where the first big risks are taken. The six wealthiest and the six poorest now play on separate tables.
After this game, some will already have forfeited their companions and must now seek to claim them back. How desperate are they? You can now:
Loan money to get back into the game, bargain with other things than money, make promises that you might regret or in other ways influence the next day’s game.
Those who hold a lot of chips might lend some to someone they support, buy someone’s Hold Token or even seek to buy other things with their chips from those who might have something they want.
Day 2
Everyone wakes up to the reality of yesterday’s wagers and bad decisions.
Transactions
This is when the host calls everyone together to redistribute companions according to the previous days results. Even if no contract is yet permanent, the transactions are meant to give a taste of what is to come. The prospective owners do not have any rights to anything yet, but can get to know their future Indentured. Some small social events are held to let people get to know each other in peace without being disturbed.
This is also when exchanges can be made. They can be one Hold Token (the tokens that reserve you the right to buy someone at the end) for another, essentially trading the rights to Indenture someone, or they can be other things. Your imagination is the limit.
This is also when loans can be made public so everyone knows who owes what to whom – the option of secret loans remain, but if you want it enforced in the future, a public one might be a good idea.
Game 3 – Let the chips fall
Everyone with chips remaining gather at the two tables. If there are only six left with markers, they play on one table. If not, as people are eliminated, the two tables become one and they play until the time runs out.
If the time runs out, the games are over, and whoever remains in play, will stay with the chips that they have got. If the total number of players are ever reduced to three, all Hold Tokens become permanent and all chips are retained.
Game End
All new contracts are signed and people get ready to depart the games. New realities settle in. What have you done, and at what cost?
